Exploring new techniques!

Hello everyone, I wanted to write a little update about some new techniques on which I’ve been concentrating recently. I’ve been very busy since finishing my exhibition, creating new work and exploring slightly new processes.

I have used elements of acrylic pouring in my work before, but haven’t studied its techniques properly until now. And I can honestly say it’s the most fun I have ever had making work!

(All the pictures shown in this post are available as either originals or prints – have a look at my artwork galleries for details.)

Serendipity #1
Serendipity #1 2018 Acrylic and iridescent medium on canvas 14 x 18 inches £289 for original (already gallery-wrapped ready for display)

I have been watching many art videos on YouTube to learn more about acrylic pouring. In essence, it requires a selection of acrylic paints, a pouring medium such as Floetrol which preferably adds some cells, and water mixed in a cup and poured over the canvas in various movements, often tilting the canvas so that the colours combine and create infinite different patterns.

I have bought myself some more cups, paints, a big tub of Floetrol, and lots of giant painting sticks, so that I have been able to start this pouring process properly.

As you can see, I like to put my own spin on these poured paintings by adding elements of detail to make them into various abstract landscapes (seeing as that is where my brain always goes!)

More new pieces are on their way soon – keep an eye on my artwork galleries!

My Art Exhibition Video!

As promised, here is the brand new video about my recent exhibition and current art practice! Mulk Raj of www.rivermadefilms.com has done a fantastic job of putting this together over the past few weeks, and I couldn’t be happier with the finished result. This video is now also my website homepage, and I am keeping my blog on its own separate page from now on.

I hope you enjoy watching this glimpse into my artistic endeavours, especially those who could not make it to the actual exhibition or artist talk last month:

Also, keep an eye on my artwork galleries; I have some brand new work on the ‘2018’ page, and am getting stuck in to more acrylic pouring techniques…

Last Day of “Landscapes of Imagination”

Today was the last day of my first solo exhibition, which has been a very enjoyable experience. Within the next week, I will be sharing the video which Mulk Raj has been editing together for me, showing more of the exhibition, my artist talk and more. It will be nice to be able to share that with everyone who wasn’t able to come along in real life, and for myself as a visual record…

For now, here is a photo from the private view:

Also, today I said goodbye to the original of “Wander”, which sold a couple of weeks ago. Prints of this are still available:

Artist Talk Reminder!

Tomorrow (Thursday) at 12:30, I will be doing a short lunchtime talk at Bath Artists’ Studios, as part of my exhibition. Please do come along if you are nearby – I will be talking about my practice and inspiration, and it’s a good chance to have a look around the gallery…

The Rivermade Podcast

As promised in my last post, here is a link to the podcast I made on Friday evening with Mulk Raj of Rivermade Films! In this episode, I discuss with Mulk about how paintings have inspired film, my working process, and some of our favourite scenes…

Opening Night of “Landscapes of Imagination”

Hello everyone! Apologies for my recent absence – I’ve been extremely busy over the last few days setting up my exhibition. As well as being my first solo exhibition, it is also the first time I have ever curated a show, and it’s been a great experience so far…

I have a total of 20 pieces – original canvases and giclee prints – displayed on the walls of the Roper Gallery, Bath Artists’ Studios, as well as a selection of smaller prints for sale. Here is a little snippet of what it looks like (with my hair matching rather well with “Ambiguous #2”!)

Last night was the private view, and it was a fantastic and quite surreal evening – lots of friends and relatives were there, as well as some other local artists, and everyone was very complimentary and interested in my paintings. There were also a lot of recurring themes which everyone interpreted from my work: Romanticism, ambiguity, the Sublime, abstract landscapes, and their relationship to my film and musical inspirations, as well as my favourite artists, such as John Martin and J.M.W. Turner…

The exhibition is now open to the public until 27th March, 12-5pm daily. I will be invigilating on most days, whilst also working on some illustrations. And this evening, I will be making a podcast with my talented filmmaker friend Mulk Raj of Rivermade Films, who is also making a short film to document my exhibition and some of my working process and creative ideas. So watch this space!

By the way, I have finally joined Instagram and am really enjoying it! I thought that now was an appropriate time to do so, so here is the link to my profile: https://www.instagram.com/jennybrockartist/

Getting Close!

It’s two weeks until ‘Landscapes of Imagination’ begins at Roper Gallery, Bath Artists’ Studios! I have been starting to publicise it as much as possible, as it’s my first solo exhibition. This has included putting up about 30 posters around town and university, which are at:

  • Green Park station
  • Local libraries
  • Good Buy Books
  • Minerva art shop
  • Little Theatre cinema
  • Bath Spa university
  • The Weston
  • The Royal Oak
  • Topping & Co. bookshop
  • Harvest
  • The Pig & Fiddle
  • The Raven
  • Boston Tea Party

Bath Spa is also advertising the exhibition on their social media, and I will also be running a facebook advert from tomorrow…

One of the posters is in very admirable company in Green Park station! I was so happy when I saw they had put it there! I am actually going to this Tears For Fears gig as well:

In rather good company!

Also, last night, I went to one of the Artbar events at The Raven pub in Bath. Artist Max Naylor was talking about his surreal, partly-imagined landscapes – I just love his work! Here are the links to his website and the Artbar blog. They also gave the opportunity for people to make announcements, so I gave a brief mention of my exhibition and handed out a few business cards.
